Updated 1/4: The University of San Francisco athletic director has lost her mind

by Rich Carlson on January 4th, 2008

*** UPDATED: January 4th - Sutton confirmed today that he will not return to coach USF next season. He also had the audacity to state “This program will be in better shape when I leave here than it was when I arrived.”

What a bunch of garbage. The only thing that will be “better” is your win/loss record, and given that USF has lost its first two games under your command, even that might not be true. Do you really think the players are interested in listening to you, knowing that you are a short-timer? How many players, in the back of their minds, are thinking about transferring because of the coaching carousel?

Your selfish, coach Sutton. Plain and simple. You’re using USF for your own personal gain. Nothing more. And you should be ashamed.

I know that the holiday season should be filled with peace on earth and goodwill towards all men. You should be nice to everyone and not judge anyone.

Well, I’m afraid that I’m going to break rule #2.

The University of San Francisco announced on Wednesday that head coach Jessie Evans was taking a “leave of absence” for undisclosed reasons, and that he would be replaced on an interim basis by Eddie Sutton.

Yes, that Eddie Sutton who used to coach Oklahoma State, Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky.

Yes, that Eddie Sutton who retired after a drunken driving accident during the 2005-2006 season. Sutton missed Oklahoma State’s final 10 games of the season and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor aggravated drunken driving and other related charges.

Sutton is a great coach. He has been successful wherever he has coached. He was punished for his drunken driving incident and has paid his debt to society. I have no problem giving him a second chance.

So why do I have a problem with Sutton taking over at USF? It seems he only has one reason: to win game #800. When asked about winning #800, Sutton said:

“It’s very important. I had a chance earlier this year to take a Division I job and didn’t think I wanted to do it. From a selfish standpoint, it is something I’m excited about.”

But wait - it gets better…

“It was a goal I had for myself,” declared Sutton. “I don’t think nationally anybody’s going to look at it and say, ‘Now you won 800 versus 798.’ There’s just not that much difference.”

Well then, coach Sutton, if it isn’t that much of a difference, why do it?

Talk about a selfish, ego-motivated move. Eddie Sutton wants to go down in the history books with at least 800 victories to his name. He blew his chance to accomplish this at Oklahoma State, so now he’s going to use USF to achieve his selfish desires.

Now, USF will benefit from some increased media coverage as Sutton chases win #800, while their long-term coaching situation is up in the air. Instead of focusing on the future of the program, USF athletic director Deborah Gore-Mann chose a quick fix - let Sutton take over for a while, gain some quick national publicity along the way, and worry about the future later.

If Evans does not return to the bench after his leave of absence, USF will need another coach, and Sutton is definitely not a long-term solution. Why not bring in an interim head coach that could potentially be a long-term hire? It doesn’t make any sense.

Sutton is not getting back into coaching because he missed the players, the practices or the competition.

He’s getting back into coaching because in his eyes, 800 is better than 798. However, In this case, I believe that 798 is better than 800.

Way better…
