Reason #463 why OJ Mayo should bolt for the NBA
OJ Mayo is an amazing talent. He is a pure scorer. He can score from inside or outside. He is athletic and charismatic. He is a sure-fire top 10 pick in next year’s NBA draft.
(Channeling Captain Jack Ross from A Few Good Men…)These are the facts, and they are indisputable.
Everybody assumes that Mayo is going to turn pro after his freshman season, and I really don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t.
And now, it appears that his coach, Tim Floyd, is actually encouraging Mayo towards that path. How so? By giving his permission for Mayo to go to the Lakers/Nuggets basketball game. What’s so bad about that? Mayo got his free tickets from Carmelo Anthony.
(Paging the NCAA Rules Committee - will the NCAA Rules Committee please pick up the white courtesy phone…)
Floyd must be an absolute knucklehead. He’s been around the college ranks long enough to know what student athletes can and cannot do. Said Floyd, “It’s a secondary violation. It’s one of ignorance on my part if it was a mistake. I’ll take the responsibility because I told the kid he could go to the game. I assumed he could go to the game. If they want to suspend me for a game, suspend me for a game, but not the kid. He did the right thing.”
I’m sorry coach, but Mayo did NOT do the right thing. He accepted free tickets that he should not have accepted. He was wrong. Now, you were even more wrong when you gave your permission for him to go.
Floyd knows Mayo is gone after this year, and he doesn’t want to ruffle the feathers of his star player. What’s next? Floyd telling Mayo that it is OK to accept a free car from a local dealership? Or that it’s OK for Mayo to stop going to class, since he’s leaving school anyway?
If you can’t count on your own coach to help keep you out of trouble with the NCAA, then why should you stay?
Perhaps Floyd can line Mayo up with Reggie Bush’s marketing guy - you know, the one that put Bush through college…
