Memphis head coach Calipari gets another raise
In what has become a yearly off-season ritual, Memphis extended the contract of head coach John Calipari and bumped up his salary. According to published reports, Calipari will earn 2.5 million dollars a season, 1.8 million of which will be guaranteed.
This is the third year in a row that Memphis has extended Calipari’s contract in an effort to keep him from leaving town. In 2006, Calipari was the leading candidate to take the North Carolina State opening but chose to stay at Memphis after his salary was raised to $1.3 million a year. After the 2006-07 season, Memphis signed Calipari to another extension at $1.8 million per year after Calipari spoke with officials about the Arkansas coaching vacancy.
You cannot argue with what Calipari has done during his time at Memphis - he wins, and he wins a lot. Calipari also helped to disprove the notion that a team from a mid-major conference could not challenge for the national championship, which the Tigers did this season.
Granted, Memphis rode the coattails of phenom Derrick Rose, who just declared for the NBA draft. But with Calipari at the helm, the Tigers should be legitimate national title contenders for years to come.
