It was reported today that University of Connecticut and Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun is being treated a second time for skin cancer.
Andy Katz of ESPN.com and the Associated Press reports that the 66-year-old Calhoun is expected to undergo six weeks of radiation treatment next month at the UConn Health Center to minimize any chance of the cancer returning. As with any cancer there will be some side effects, but they are expected to be short team, and his doctors believe that Calhoun will be Cancer-free and back on the sidelines for his 22nd season with the Huskies this fall. He is expected to start radiation treatments on June 24 and will most likely miss any recruiting trips this summer.
Calhoun was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer last year, just weeks after being honored as the Coaches vs. Cancer “champion” of the year for his dedication to the American Cancer Society, according to ESPN.com. Squamous cell cancer is the second-most common form of skin cancer, with more than 250,000 new cases a year in the United States, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Calhoun is one of college basketball’s most successful coaches. In 35 years of coaching, 14 at Northeaster and 21 at UConn, he is 750-328 overall record with two NCAA titles at UConn in 1999 and 2004. Five players from UConn were taken in the first round of the NBA Draft in 2006 – a first for any school.
As a Cancer patient (six months in remission!), I can sympathize a little with what Coach Calhoun is going through. What will get him through this is a positive attitude and a great support group, which I’m sure he had with everyone at UConn and his family and friends and the coaching fraternity across the nation, as well as doing everything his doctors tell him to do. I look forward to seeing Calhoun in excellent shape and back with the Huskies this fall.
