FSU hoops fans holding their collective breath

by Rich Carlson on September 27th, 2007

florida-state.gifLong ago, former Florida Gators head football coach Steve Spurrier quipped that FSU stood for “Free Shoes University” after wide receivers Peter Warrick and Laveranues Coles’s infamous shoe-shopping spree at a local Dillard’s department store. Now, it appears that FSU might stand for something else: False Scores University.

FSU school officials announced Wednesday that two athletic department assistance employees have resigned and 23 student athletes were implicated in cheating on online exams. At this time, the identities of the 23 students have not been released by the university.

Seminole basketball coach Leonard Hamilton and the rest of the FSU coaches are hoping and praying that their athletes are not involved. If members of the mens basketball team are among the 23 implicated athletes, it could be a very long year for Noles.

Given the large number of colleges that utilize online classes, it is highly likely that other students at other universities are also cheating on their online exams. It will be very interesting to see how the NCAA reacts to this scandal and if the use of online classes comes into question.

As a teacher of online business classes, I have often wondered if any of my students have cheated on their online exams. They are strictly on the honor system when it comes to their exams. For all I know, they could be taking an exam with a room full of people helping them answer the questions. I have no way of knowing if they are honest or not.

Florida State could end up paying a huge penalty when this scandal is put to bed. Scholarships could be taken away, players could be kicked out of school, millions of dollars of sports revenue could be lost.

That is quite the price to pay for good grades…
