Final Four predictions

by Rich Carlson on April 4th, 2008

We’re 24 hours away from the Final Four battle of #1 seeds.

Before I get to my predictions, I have something I want to get off my chest.

I was listening to the local sports-radio talk show this afternoon and they were echoing some thoughts that I’ve been hearing on other local and national shows: nobody is excited for this Final Four because there isn’t a Cinderella story in it.

What a bunch of nonsense. What could be better than to watch the best 4 teams in the country battle it out for the national championship? Yes, Cinderella stories are nice, but come on now - you want to see the best play the best, and that’s what we have this weekend.

The second point that I’ve heard on numerous other shows is that it is a good thing that Davidson isn’t in the Final Four because they would have been crushed.

Garbage.

Did anybody see Davidson play against Kansas? They held their own against the Jayhawks and very easily could have won the game. Don’t think for one second that Stephen Drew and the boys couldn’t hang with any of the Final Four teams.

OK. Now on to my predictions:

Game #1 - UCLA versus Memphis - I’ll admit it - I’ve been a little hesitant to jump on Memphis’ bandwagon all season long. Why? Because they play in Conference USA, that’s why. I know they are one of the most athletic teams in the country, but I felt they were never really tested. That all changed after they absolutely demolished a very good Texas team. I’m not entirely sold on UCLA either. Yes, Kevin Love is a phenom, but I haven’t seen a team really physically pound him with double and triple teams. If Memphis is smart, they’ll try to get Love in early foul trouble.

The way Memphis is rolling right now, I can’t pick against them.

PICK: Memphis

Game #2 - Kansas versus North Carolina - North Carolina has been smoking hot all tournament. They’ve played high-octane when they needed to (Mount St. Marys and Arkansas) and have slowed it down whey they needed to (Washington State). They are peaking at just the right time. Kansas scared me a little bit with their effort against Davidson in the Elite 8. With their senior leadership, that effort never should have happened, but it did, and that is troublesome.

Hansbrough and company are on a mission, and they won’t be denied.

PICK: North Carolina
