Cleaning up the sideline antics…
I ran across a story this afternoon that brought a smile to my face - the NCAA is going to crack down on coaches who throw tantrums on the sidelines, swear, curse and try to make the referees look bad.
Bobby Knight - beware…the refs are coming for you.
All referees will start to enforce a behavior policy that strictly prohibits coaches from using any profane or abusive language. Any violation of the new code will result in a technical foul. Personally, I have never understood the need for anybody to use profanity or vulgar language. To me, it shows a lack of intelligence and the inability to express yourself without using offensive or crude words.
The behavior policy also prohibits coaches from making wild, excessive gestures in an attempt to show up the referees. I sure hope the refs don’t get too picky with this rule. I love to watch coaches melt down on the sidelines and show emotion…as long as it is in good taste. Hopefully, this rule won’t turn all the coaches into stoic robots.
The NCAA should be applauded for trying to put an end to the abusive and profane language that is too often heard on the sidelines.
If coaches can’t find other ways to express themselves, I suggest they go to the nearest bookstore and buy a thesaurus.
Job well done, NCAA. Job well done.
